My Elderly Space

A look at the remarkable lives of the elderly

Woman dies at 115 as world's oldest person

We featured Edna Parker, 115, back in April 2008 when she celebrated her 115th birthday in a polka-dot dress. She passed away today as the 14th oldest validated supercentenarian in history. Her grandson had this to say about her longevity,“But she's never been a worrier and she's always been a thin person, so maybe that has something to do with it.”

Maria de Jesus of Portugal, who was born Sept. 10, 1893, is now the world's oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

We send our sympathies to Ms. Parker's family.

99 Year-Old Celebrity

Mae Laborde, 99, started her Hollywood career in her 90s. She's made appearances on Mad TV, was a cheerleader on ESPN, and starred in a Lexus commercial. Her films include Pineapple Express (2008) and The Heartbreak Kid (2007).

So what's the secret to her late-blooming success? "I'm just a natural."

Centenarian featured in Obama's victory speech

Ann Nixon Cooper sometimes refers to Barack Obama as "that young man". After all, she is 106 years old.

In his victory speech, Obama had a special place for Cooper: "But one that's on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing -- Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

"She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

"And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can."

Septuagenarian scores in college hoops

On the basketball court, it's not uncommon to hear "trash talking" that include labels like "grandpa". But in Ken Mink's case, he's actually old enough to be a grandpa. It's been 52 years since the 73-year-old has played in a college basketball game, but he's still got a few moves.

He played about 10 minutes, scoring two points on free throws, in Roane State's 93-42 victory over King College's junior varsity Monday night. "I just floated the shots in there. I'm in the books now. I can relax a little bit," he said after the game.
